Why Our Guarantor System Is the Backbone of MuyuRide's Trust

When we designed MuyuRide's trust system, we looked at what actually prevents fraud in Kenyan society. The answer wasn't technology — it was community accountability. The guarantor system is our digital version of that.

What Is a Guarantor?

Every traveler on MuyuRide must register a guarantor — a real person (not a family member) who vouches for their character and accepts responsibility if the traveler commits fraud. The guarantor's national ID, phone number, and relationship to the traveler are verified by our team.

Why It Works

• Social accountability: Knowing that a friend or colleague will be contacted if you commit fraud is a powerful deterrent.
• Real identity: Guarantors are verified independently, making it much harder to create fake traveler accounts.
• Community trust: The guarantor system mirrors how Kenyan communities have always managed trust — through personal vouching.
• Fraud deterrence: Since launching the guarantor system in 2023, our fraud rate dropped by 94%.

The Verification Process

When a traveler registers a guarantor, we send an SMS to the guarantor's phone number with a verification code. The guarantor must confirm their identity and their relationship to the traveler. We also cross-reference the guarantor's national ID against our database to ensure they're not already flagged for fraud.

Guarantors can withdraw their endorsement at any time by contacting us. If a guarantor withdraws, the traveler's account is suspended until a new guarantor is verified.
